Awards for Wildlife Photography

Monica Corcuera is a Mexican award-winning Fine Art and Wildlife photographer, published author, and conservationist whose work reflects a lifelong commitment to protecting wildlife. Deeply rooted in respect for nature, her photography seeks to inspire empathy and foster a deeper connection between people and the living world.

Her passion for wildlife began in childhood, inspired by her parents. Her mother, a Fine Art painter, writer, and conservationist, nurtured her artistic sensitivity, while her father’s travels throughout Africa and vivid safari stories awakened in her a profound connection with the wild. These early influences shaped her artistic vision and ignited a lifelong desire to explore, document, and safeguard the species and habitats that inspire her.

In 2009, Monica published her first novel, The English Photographer, exploring the environmental impact of gold mining in Tanzania. Two years later, in 2011, she embarked on her first photographic safari to Africa, discovering a continent that would become the heart of her creative vision and conservation work.

Through long-term observation and ethical field practices, Monica strives to portray wildlife not as distant subjects, but as sentient beings with individuality, emotion, and enduring family bonds.

Her photographs celebrate quiet moments, subtle interactions, and the emotional depth of life in the wild, inviting viewers to reflect on humanity’s responsibility toward the species and ecosystems with which we share the planet.

She has photographed extensively across Africa, including Zimbabwe, Kenya, Zambia, Tanzania, South Africa, and Botswana, with a particular focus on the Big Five, endangered species, and keystone animals whose survival is essential to the health of entire ecosystems.

Her work has received international recognition through prestigious photography competitions, earning accolades for its artistic depth and conservation-focused vision.

Beyond creating images, Monica uses photography as a powerful tool for education, advocacy, and environmental awareness. Through visual storytelling, she seeks to draw attention to habitat loss, biodiversity, and the urgent need to preserve the fragile balance of our planet’s ecosystems.

In 2014, she volunteered at the C.A.R.E. Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre & Sanctuary in South Africa’s Grietjie Nature Reserve, where she worked in the rehabilitation and release of chacma baboons. This hands-on experience deepened her commitment to wildlife protection and reinforced her belief that photography could become one of her most powerful tools for making a difference.

She continues to return to Africa, documenting its wildlife with a clear purpose: to inspire wonder, foster empathy, and give a voice to the wild.

“Why wait until a species is on the brink of extinction before we try to help?”
— Rita Miljo (1931–2012), Founder of C.A.R.E. Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre & Sanctuary

"When you've been to Africa... It will always run in your veins"

Africa is the land where I discovered the true meaning of life, a place that feels like returning home. Through my photographic safaris, I've learned how much we desire and how little we truly need to be happy. In the vastness of nature, I understood how small we are, yet how deeply connected we can feel to something greater. That realization has filled my life with purpose.
It's impossible not to cherish every moment in this God-given paradise. I feel humbled and grateful not only to witness it, but to be part of it.

The breathtaking light of Africa, from the quiet promise of dawn to the magical glow of sunset, shapes every day on safari. Sunrises wake me before dawn, eager to learn, observe, and capture stories written in light, silence, and wild movement. As the day fades, skies melt into horizons of deep blues, golden yellows, striking oranges, and rich reds where silhouettes of wildlife and acacia trees define the timeless spirit of these faraway lands. No two days are ever the same; life here is constant motion, transformation, and wonder, even in stillness.

These photographs are my way of sharing that feeling... a collection of moments that reflect the spirit, beauty and timeless majesty of Africa's wildlife, and the quiet magic that keeps calling me back.
