Its patterned coat blends into the dim vegetation while its eyes remain bright and focused. MARION THE WHITE RHINO 05

Marion is one of only two white rhinos protected within Il Ngwesi Conservancy, in Laikipia, Kenya. This portrait was captured during a walking safari with Maasai guides, an encounter that allowed us to experience her presence from the ground and at eye level. There is something deeply powerful about meeting a rhinoceros on foot. Up close, the immense strength of this ancient species is matched by an unexpected sense of quiet dignity. For a moment, the distance between observer and wild animal seemed to disappear.
